Antrix, the Bangalore-based commercial arm of the Indian space programme, and Malaysian satellite communications services supplier Measat Global have signed an agreement to create a 50:50 joint venture aimed at pooling their satellite resources in the economically resurgent Asia-Pacific region.

The agreement was signed in New Delhi on 19 December in the presence of Indian prime minister Dr Man Mohan Singh and Malaysian prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. It aims to develop a "satellite neighbourhood" for millions of broadcasting and communications customers in Asia Pacific.

The joint venture hopes to position India's multipurpose domestic spacecraft Insat as a leading satellite system in the Asia Pacific region. The Indian Space Research Organisation believes its Insat system will find customers in Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Singapore.
