An Air New Zealand airliner assisted a Qantas Boeing 747-400 bound for Sydney from Los Angeles divert to Auckland on 29 October following a weather radar malfunction. The 747 encountered the problem 3h after leaving the US gateway. Following discussions with Australian flight operations, the crew contacted a nearby ANZ aircraft - reportedly a Boeing 777-200 - which then accompanied the 747 and supplied weather data throughout the remaining journey to Auckland.
