The Royal Australian Air Force is to equip its F-111 strike bombers with a podded electronic countermeasures jammer to enhance aircraft self-protection.

Intended for operational service, by mid-2001, the RAAF plans to select a system before the end of next year, with the tender calling for digital RF memory capability, but also stressing that systems offered must already be in operational service aboard jet strike aircraft with another air force. Key candidates for the requirement are expected to include the Northrop Grumman ALQ-131, and the Raytheon ALQ-184.

The tender closes on 7 May.
