Far be it for your old Uncle to second-guess NASA, but the research agency's Advanced Aeropropulsion project office has just awarded a California-based company a contract for a "Feasibility study for a multiple-engines in-wing concept technology". I suggest they pop over to Woodford in the UK to see the Nimrod - the ageless derivative of the aaaaah…de Havilland Comet.
