Bangladesh is buying eight MAPO MiG-29 Fulcrums in a $115 million deal. An air force requirement for new fighters has existed for several years.
Four aircraft will be delivered in December following pilot and technician training in Russia, while the remaining aircraft will follow next February.
Bangladesh will use the MiG-29s to supplement its ageing fleet of Mikoyan MiG-21 Fishbed fighters and Shenyang F-6s (a copy of the MiG-19).
The country also operates Chengdu F-7MAirguards - Chinese MiG-21 derivatives - in the ground attack role.
Bangladesh is expected to return to its traditional Chinese supplier when the time comes to fulfil a requirement for another squadron of ground attack aircraft.
