Boeing has set record sales figure for its freighter aircraft over the past two financial years – and the manufacturer is confident that 2007 will also enter its record books.

Speaking in Hong Kong, Boeing’s regional marketing director (cargo) Jim Edgar said the US company’s latest forecast shows a greater increase in demand for freighters than was predicted at this time last year. But around three quarters of all freighter aircraft are still converted from passenger or combi aircraft rather than being purpose-built for cargo.

The exception to this is the market for widebody freighters where more than 50% of sales are now bespoke aircraft – some growth and some replacements. The full forecast will be launched by Jim Edgar at an Air Freight Asia media briefing tomorrow morning at 10am.
