Boeing is working its way through the backlog of Next Generation 737s built before last-minute modifications, including a revised horizontal stabiliser leading edge and novel upward opening emergency exits, which were required for US and European certification. Twenty of the 28 737-700s completed before certification have now been delivered with a further seven aircraft, either in flight test or refurbishment. "All will be through retrofit and modification cycles by the start of the fourth quarter," says Boeing. By 1 July, a total of 50 -700/800s had been delivered, 17 were in final preparation and 19 were undergoing refurbishment and modification.
