A US Marine Corps Boeing F/A-18C Hornet has crashed near RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk, England, with the pilot reportedly killed.

“An incident involving a US Marine Corps F/A-18 Hornet, which departed from RAF Lakenheath, occurred at about 11am today near Littleport, United Kingdom,” a notice from the USMC on 21 October 2015 says.

“Response efforts are under way and the incident is currently under investigation. More information will be released as it becomes available.”

The Third Marine Aircraft Wing’s F-18 comes under the remit of the Marine Attack Fighter Sqn 232 stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, San Diego.

No information on the pilot’s condition has been released by the USMC, but the Cambridgeshire Police says that there is one casualty, which is believed to be the pilot: “Emergency services are currently at the scene of a plane crash on farmland in Redmere, Ely,” it says. “We can confirm one fatality and believe there was just one person on board the aircraft.”

The USMC has 228 of the F-18 series in its inventory, Flightglobal’s Fleets Analyzer database shows.
