A new gun pod has been unveiled here by the Boeing-led team of companies responsible for the development of the Advanced 27mm aircraft cannon.
On display at the US Defence Department corral, the pod combines the Mauser 27mm cannon developed for the two Joint Strike Fighter contenders and Eurofighter with a linear linkless ammunition feed. Featuring compact ammunition storage, the feed system returns spent cases to the magazine. Reloading can be completed in less than five minutes.
Accuracy
The pod is rated for flight at up to supersonic speeds. To ensure accuracy under all conditions it is hard-mounted to the aircraft with a specially designed hardback adapter.
Developed by Mauser, Boeing, Western Design and Sargent Fletcher, the pod could be available for delivery 18 months from receipt of order.
