AEROFLOT Preliminary figures from the Russian flag carrier indicate a 26% rise in income and a full-year profit. This is despite seeing first-half profits plunge 55% to $72.2 million as operating expenses soared 42% to just over $2 billion on rising fuel costs, consuming most of its $2.14 billion revenue. For the full year, the airline - which boosted passenger numbers to 9.3 million, including 5.7 million on international routes - says it managed to "contain" costs.

ALITALIA Less than a week after resuming operations in its newly restructured form, the Italian flag carrier was in familiar territory as its SDL Intercategoriale union "confirmed" the first strike of the new Alitalia with a 4h work stoppage on 19 January. The union is objecting to job losses and recruitment practices at the relaunched airline, which began operating on 13 January following its takeover by investor group Compagnia Aerea Italiana.
