WINTER OLYMPICS As Vancouver (pictured) gears up for its winter Games in 2010, the Russian organisers of Sochi 2014 can celebrate a key financial milestone in the form of a $100 million-plus deal  with its latest tier one sponsor Aeroflot, which will introduce new flights to the Black Sea resort, including direct routes. The Russian flag carrier will transport Russian Olympic and Paralympic teams and official delegations from 2009 until 2016.

US CARRIERS Despite declining average fares, the Air Transport Association of America expects a 3.5% drop to 16 million passengers travelling globally on US airlines during the country's eight-day 2009 Labor Day holiday period between 2 September and 9 September. "Economic uncertainty and persistently high energy prices for consumers and businesses continue to impact demand for air travel," says chief executive James May.
