MALAYSIA AIRLINES Compensation for Airbus A380 delays helped lift first quarter net profit to 310 million ringgitts ($97 million). Malaysia Airlines, which has six A380s on order but will not see one until 2012, made an operating profit of 290 million ringgitts for the period, reversing a 141 million ringgitts quarterly loss a year ago, as revenue increased 21% to 3.3 billion ringgitts after strong traffic growth. Cargo revenues rose by more than 50% to 456 million ringgitts.

Bad week

 Alitalia

ALITALIA The reincarnated Italian flag carrier posted a first quarter operating loss of €125 million ($154 million) on revenue of €639 million, following a €274 million loss for the full year 2009. Quarterly comparison is distorted by the fact that Alitalia, in its current form, started operating in mid-January 2009, but the carrier is quoting a loss of €210 million last time on revenue of €515 million. The carrier believes that it is on track to break even in 2011.
