Nova Scotia-based CanJet will withdraw in September from its last route in western Canada. The airline ventured west a year ago, but ran into surprisingly stiff resistance from Calgary-based WestJet. As a result, CanJet started pulling back last November, leaving only the Toronto-Calgary route that it now plans to drop. It is unclear whether CanJet will venture west again next summer.

For now CanJet is focusing on its network in eastern Canada. Julie Gossen, CanJet’s chief operating officer, is warning staff that the airline may be forced to slow its growth because of high fuel prices and recent decisions by its flight attendants and pilots to join unions. In a letter to employees Gossen warns that these changes will require CanJet to “rethink and reshape our strategic business plan”. ■
