Your editorial "Careful Approach" (Flight International, 4 December 2001), was off the mark. The captain is captain at all times. The air traffic control people seem to feel they are in control whereas the captain flying under instrument flight rules has the duty to his passengers to get them on the ground safely.

He should act like a captain and identify the runway he will use, not just accept what the controller has dictated irrespective of what rule or law is involved.

Today's airmen seem to be indoctrinated into acceptance instead of demanding what they know to be operationally correct.
