The world tour of Canadair's CL-415 amphibious aircraft, which included Asian Aerospace '96, has paid dividends as Bombardier confirms Italian government orders for two more aircraft with options for another four.

Bombardier is keen to see the order book expand.

The massive tour of the water bomber two years ago was said to have impressed many civil protection agencies in various countries.

The latest Italian order, for delivery within the next few months, gives the country eight CL-415s.

The aircraft has a proven track record for combating wildfires, having accumulated 6,000 flight hours and completed more than 21,340 drops.

The CL-415 is absent from the show this year, but that is no reflection on the importance that Tom Appleton, president of Bombardier's amphibious division, puts on the Pacific Rim region.

"This aircraft is ideally suited for both aerial fire-fighting and for search-and-rescue missions. Previous demonstrations and visits here in the Asia Pacific have clearly shown that there is an interest in the CL-415.

"We are in discussion with several government agencies and now look forward to the end of this current recession."

The Canadair division is still celebrating a breakthrough into the US market earlier this month when North Carolina ordered a CL-215. Until now US states have been leasing the amphibians from the Canadians.

CL-415 in action at Singapore two years ago: missing this year but looking for a role in the region.
