Cyprus Airways has told its staff they have three months to decide between working for the statecarrier or second jobs outside the company.

Moonlighting has become a problem, with some airline cabin crew taking up to 67 days sick leave a year to have time to hold down second jobs. On average, airline staff take three times as many days off as employees of other Cypriot semi-government organisations.

"It has to stop," the carrier says, "because it is affecting productivity." The new rule is part of moves to increase efficiency and productivity ahead of next May when the island joins the European Union. The state carrier will then face stiff competition on European routes.
