The Czech Aircraft Works (CZAW) Mermaid has become the first amphibian to receive US light sport aircraft (LSA) certification. The approval comes as the manufacturer expands its production facility in Uherské Hradište to satisfy demand for its growing product portfolio.

The largest market is the USA where CZAW wants to establish a US distributor network through US importer Sport Aircraft Works. Dan Defelici, CZAW board member and president of Sport Air Works, says the company has received overwhelming demand for its three LSA designs: the Parrot, Sport Cruiser and Mermaid. “We have received over 200 orders for the Mermaid. Two have been delivered already and we expect to deliver another five aircraft by the end of March.” Up to 30 Mermaids are scheduled for delivery this year, Defelici says. The all-metal, high-wing Parrot received certification last November and 20 have been ordered. The low-wing Sport Cruiser is earmarked for US certification in the second week of March and 10 aircraft have already been sold, Defelici says.
