Daimler-Benz Aerospace (Dasa) is in the final stages of negotiating an order from Greece for its autonomous free-flight dispenser system, a development of the German-Swedish DWS 39 stand-off weapon.

The missile has been qualified for launch from the Lockheed Martin F-16, and qualification is in progress for the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom and Vought A-7 Corsair. The Greek air force is the only one in the world which operates all three types.

Dasa says that it expects a contract from Greece "very soon", leading to a two-year production programme. The weapon differs from the earlier DWS 39 with the addition of a combined inertial/ satellite navigation system and a radar altimeter.

The unpowered dispenser can attack targets at ranges up to 20km (14 miles), depending on the launch altitude.
