DAIMLER-BENZ Aerospace (DASA) and E-Systems are expected to submit rival bids for a navigation-systems upgrade for the German navy's Dassault Atlantic Mk1 maritime-patrol aircraft by the end of July.

The upgrade is part of the navy's Nutzungsdauerverlangerungsprogramm (NDV), intended to keep the aircraft in service until 2010. Germany originally purchased 20 aircraft, six of which were modified for the electronic-intelligence role.

As well as an improved navigation suite, to include a global-positioning-system-navigation capability, the NDV programme is to include the integration of a night-vision/bad-weather infra red (IR) sensor, a communications-systems upgrade and improved electronic-support measures for self-defence.

A modern, radar with track-while-scan capability, is also to be included. The upgrades are to be incorporated between next year and 1999.

DASA and E-Systems confirm that they are bidding for both the navigation-system upgrade and the IR sensor.

DASA's IR-sensor bid will include equipment supplied by GEC-Marconi of the UK - more than ten companies are expected to submit proposals for this element.

The aircraft communications-systems upgrade will include the replacement of two HF radios, the addition of a FM nautical radio and a modified UHF telex unit.
