Flight International online news 11:00 GMT: As Space Shuttle Discovery and International Space Station (ISS) crews spend their fifth day together, Nasa is planning for a spacewalk that would be unmatched in the history of space travel.

Mission Specialists Soichi Noguchi and Steve Robinson are preparing for their third excursion tomorrow (3 August), which has been revised to include the unprecedented task of repairing an area of the Shuttle's heat shield.

Mission managers decided on Monday to remove two gap fillers that are protruding from areas between heat-shielding tiles on the Shuttle's underside.

During the extra vehicular activity, Robinson will venture under Discovery on the tip of the ISS robotic arm, locate the protrusions and gently tug until they come off.

If that does not work, Robinson will have tools to cut off the protrusions.
