US company draws on its military experience to boost specifications on large airliner

Airbus is demanding higher pressure and reliability from the A380 large-capacity airliner's hydraulics. US company Eaton is developing the power generation and fluid conveyance systems for the European airliner, drawing on its experience with high-pressure systems for military aircraft.

Eaton expects the A380 hydraulic power generation and fluid conveyance system contracts to be worth around $270 million over the next 20 years. The Jackson, Mississippi-based aerospace unit is also developing the 28,000kPa primary fluid power system for the Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, business which is expected to be worth almost $1 billion.
