Global engine giant Rolls-Royce launched its 2008 ‘business jet outlook’ forecast at EBACE on Monday. And the data reinforces what the other airframers and engine-makers have been saying recently about the chances of the global economic downturn affecting the marketplace.

With burgeoning order books and manufacturing backlogs, the message seems to be: Crisis - what crisis?

Headlines of the Rolls-Royce forecast include the much-heralded 28% year-on-year increase in business jet deliveries; continued growth in business jet deliveries through the remainder of the decade; and the forecast of an engine market worth $110 billion over the next 20 years, with medium and large business jets dominating in terms of aircraft and engine value.

Around 79,000 engines, valued at $110 billion, will be needed over the next 20 years to meet the demand for new business jet aircraft, from very light jets upwards. Demand is being augmented by an increase in deliveries to non-US markets coupled with the introduction of new models.

Of the 39,000 new aircraft, 40% are expected to be in the medium or large business jet category (75% by value). The forecast predicts that nearly 16,000 medium and large business jets will be delivered between 2008 and 2027.

The growing importance of EBACE as an international showcase for business aviation is reflected in Rolls-Royce’s choice of launch venue. The forecast has traditionally been launched at NBAA each autumn, But not this year, as demand is becoming truly global, rather than centred on North America.

Alan Stiley, Rolls-Royce marketing VP, corporate and regional engines, says: “The market continues to grow at a robust rate; it has also become more diverse in terms of geographic distribution and breadth of aircraft capability available. In response, Rolls-Royce will continue to invest in new products and services in order to maintain its leading position with business aircraft operators and manufacturers.”
