The European Commission is to contribute to a €10 million ($11.3 million) fuel cell technology development programme.
Rolls-Royce Fuel Cells Systems (RRFCS), leading the development team, is working on a solid-oxide fuel cell gas turbine hybrid fuelled by natural gas for megawatt-sized stationary power generation, but the technology could be developed for transport, defence and marine applications.
Fuel cell aerospace applications focus on long-duration unmanned air vehicle power requirements and motor-glider engine alternatives, and as the technology matures, aircraft auxiliary power units.
