Embraer has begun flight testing its Legacy business jet, which is based on the ERJ-135 regional jet. The 31 March first flight demonstrated the winglet-equipped Legacy's increased maximum take-off weight, service ceiling and Mach number compared with the 37-seat ERJ-135.

The first aircraft will be used for aerodynamic and systems tests, including certification testing of the new fuel system. An additional 3,200kg (7,000lb) of fuel housed in an extended belly fairing is expected to increase range with 10 passengers to 5,930km (3,200nm).

The first flight was made at the Legacy's 21,990kg (48,480lb) maximum weight and reached a ceiling of 39,000ft (12,000m) and speed of Mach 0.8 - compared with 37,000ft and M0.78 for the ERJ-135, which has a 20,000kg maximum take-off weight.

US and European certification of the Legacy is set for the third quarter. Once certification tests are complete, the first aircraft will be fitted with an executive interior and used as a demonstrator before delivery to a Brazilian customer. Embraer has 32 firm orders and 31 options for the Legacy.
