Italian multimedia group Euphon has joined with Eutelsat to create a new satellite infrastructure based on Eutelsat's OpenSky system. The new system would provide telecommunications services, television/multimedia distribution and data transmission. It will require funding of more than €35 million over 10 years.

Eutelsat will provide the space segment capacity and the satellite communications platform, while Euphon will operate the system.

OpenSky will provide customers with value-added services, such as editing and processing audio- visual material, managing multimedia content and customised broadband satellite applications.

The new platform will transmit from the Eutelsat W3 communications satellite, to be positioned at 7°E in geostationary orbit.
