The livery of the French-made Cougar ultra-light aircraft on static display is flaming red - just the thing for a machine that fire services see as ideal for surveillance in areas of forest-fire hazard.

Police and military customers have also been attracted to the Cougar, which has a modest base price of Fr300,000 ($48,000).

The Cougar is built in Tarbes, France, by Louit, a specialist manufacturer of aerospace and marine parts.

Powered by a 100hp Rotax engine, the 472kg Cougar has a cruising speed of 110kt (200km/hr) and can take off and land in less than 100m.

It has folding wings for easy transport and its all-metal structure is very tolerant of intensive operational use, says company representative Thierry Flayelle.
