A FUTURE AIR Navigation System (FANS) Stakeholders Group (FSG) has been formed to assist airlines and governments with implementation of the International Civil Aviation Organisation's (ICAO) satellite-based communication, navigation, surveillance/air-traffic management (CNS/ATM) system.

The FSG consists of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), Air Transport Action Group, ARINC, Inmarsat, International Business Aircraft Association, International Co-ordinating Council of Aerospace Industries Associations, International Council of Aircraft Owners and Pilots Associations and SITA. The Group is based in Montreal, Canada, "...to ensure close links with ICAO", IATA says.

"Our aim is to help air-traffic-service providers and airlines achieve the benefits of [FANS CNS/ATM] implementation," says FSG project manager Neil Bronson. Areas where the Group can provide assistance include "...financial, technical, training, procedures and provision of global satellite-system elements for communication, navigation and surveillance", IATA says.

Initial implementation work is focused on the Asia-Pacific region. Bronson says that the Group will work closely with all government and private organisations involved in FANS CNS/ATM in "these and other areas", using the resources of the FSG members' international offices.
