Firefly, Malaysia Airlines' new turboprop operation in west Malaysia, launched commercial services on 3 April from Subang airport, near Kuala Lumpur, to the airline's operations base on the west Malaysian island of Penang. The carrier has two Fokker 50s. Firefly managing director Eddy Leong says that Firefly will "capture a new market segment by serving destinations that are not viable for MAS mainline" and adds that the airline is expected to break-even within its first year. Initial destinations served from Penang include Koh Samui, Kota Bahru, Kuala Trengganu, Kuantan, Langkawi and Phuket.
