Exec 162F distributor secures classification based on very light helicopter category

Rotorway International has completed modifications to its Exec 162F kit helicopter to allow the model to be sold in France and is hoping the approval will pave the way for it to be offered in other European countries.

Rotorway first applied for Exec 162F certification from French airworthiness body DGAC in 1993. The helicopter's two previous distributors had given up the quest, but current distributor, Heli Diffusion France (HDF), secured approval late last month.

To achieve certification in France, the DGAC asked for better fire-prevention measures for the cockpit and fuel tank, changes to the instrumentation panel, and the shifting of some controls from the footwells to the flightdeck.

"The original aircraft has some foot-operated controls, but the regulations here state that all controls must be visible to both pilots," says Yves Pearcy, managing director of HDF. The Rhône-Alpes-based distributor has secured a new classification based on the very light helicopter category, with the type redesignated in France as the Exec 162HDF.

"Now that there are these two classifications in Europe for experimental aircraft, we expect other countries to follow suit quickly," says Brent Marshall, Rotorway's vice president for international sales. The company is discussing dealership possibilities in Germany.

The Exec 162F has a maximum take-off weight of 680kg (1,500lb) and a maximum speed of 130kt (240km/h).

The 162HDF kit is expected to sell for c70,000, and HDF foresees a market of "at least seven" a year in France. Rotorway says that the majority of kits are being completed in 300-400h.
