THE US FEDERAL Aviation Administration may impose new fees on general-aviation aircraft, to recover part of air-traffic-control-system costs.

The proposal has immediately drawn fire from aviation groups, including the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA), which dubbs the proposed fee "...an entirely new tax."

"If it becomes a reality, the new fee will undoubtedly be more burdensome than the fuel tax and require a new level of bureaucracy to administer," says GAMA. "It is ridiculous to subject business aviation to multiple forms of taxation-The fuel tax is the best method for collecting revenue from general aviation," it adds.
