Lack of gate space is forcing Virgin America to abandon plans in the near term to launch flights from Chicago O'Hare airport.

The carrier initially planned to inaugurate service from O'Hare late this year, but in October pushed the launch date to 2009.

"We have been unable to acquire the gate space needed to meet our immediate expansion plans from the legacy airlines that currently operate at O'Hare," says carrier CEO David Cush. "Given our immediate fleet plans, it will not be our next new city."

Virgin America is examining its list of prospective destinations and "will announce our eighth new destination in the coming days".
