The Virgin Atlantic Scaled Composites GlobalFlyer attempt at the first solo non-stop round-the-world flight will be launched and controlled from Salina, Kansas. Weather permitting, the record attempt by pilot Steve Fossett is planned for early January.
Salina's central US location and its 3,750m (12,300ft)-long runway contributed to its selection. Mission control will be at Kansas State University Salina's College of Technology and Aviation. The unrefuelled round-the-world flight by the Williams International FJ44 turbofan-powered GlobalFlyer is expected to take 80h.
