PORTABLE IFE Makers of portable in-flight entertainment players could have a bumper year as cash-strapped airlines look for lower-cost alternatives to wired-in systems. Wale Adepoju of air transport consultancy IMDC says that when airlines defer delivery of new aircraft, which are now generally equipped with installed IFE, they start using portables on existing aircraft: "Portables might go up by 10% to 15% in 2009. It's going to be a good year for those guys."

BOEING FedEx Express has deferred delivery of its first 777 freighters by up to 17 months, postponing $275 million in commitments from 2009 into the future. FedEx still has 15 777Fs on order, but deliveries of four aircraft originally scheduled for this year have been pushed to 2010. Boeing on 14 November announced a three-month delay to this quarter of the 777F first delivery to launch customer Air France, citing the two-month strike by its machinists.
