A UK government-funded programme to foster the transfer of knowledge from academia to industry to help the aviation sector respond to the challenge of climate change will identify up to 10 university-led study projects.
The £5 million ($9.74 million) Opportunities for Meeting the Environmental challenge of Growth in Aviation (OMEGA) programme was announced by the UK Department of Trade and Industry in May, and starts in January. OMEGA brings together universities, industry, government and pressure groups. The first two-day workshop in Cambridge saw university academics, UK Civil Aviation Authority officials and industry representatives, including those from Airbus and Rolls-Royce, meet to discuss long-term aviation growth scenarios.
"These will cover areas from economics and atmospheric science to innovative technology and air traffic management issues. Studies will draw in government, industry and other stakeholders and last up to two years," says OMEGA technical adviser David Raper.
