If you thought that voice-activated avionics were strictly for hi-tech jets like the Eurofighter, take a look at Stand B5 in Hall 1.

Octec and Skyquest are showing their Integrated Mission Equipment System (IMES), which they developed jointly to activate various aircraft systems using spoken commands. The system was originally designed for the Devon and Cornwall police who needed some way of cutting down on the amount of button pushing required on their helicopters.

Geoff Turner, Skyquest Aviation's marketing director, says: "With all the video surveillance equipment on board, there were so many different panels and switches that the observer barely had time to watch the criminal," he adds.

The two companies are now looking to sell the system to the military, but it could be fitted to commercial helicopters.
