A new general aviation integrated avionics system has been unveiled by Honeywell for application in single- and twin- piston aircraft, helicopters, turboprops and light business jets.

Dubbed the Bendix/King APEX, the system builds on the Echo platform study which was unveiled earlier this year (Flight International, 16-22 May). Combining a suite of electronic attitude, heading and air data sensors with central control of radios, flight controls and safety systems, APEX provides an 'out of the window' type picture showing the horizon in the distance and a "life like view of the ground passing under the aircraft", says Honeywell.

To generate the view, APEX uses a new visual reference technology called Visual Cueing and Control (VC2). This makes significant features, such as runways, appear in the picture where they would appear if the pilot were actually looking at them. To make the transition to VC2 easier for current pilots, and to guarantee accurate flying, some traditional symbology is included such as degrees of pitch and compass presentation.
