Hong Kong’s civil aviation department is investigating an engine fire involving a Nippon Cargo Airlines Boeing 747-8 Freighter.
The incident happened on 29 March when the aircraft, registered JA18KZ, was approaching Hong Kong International airport. It had departed from Tokyo Narita.
The crew was cleared to land on Runway 07L, and were about 50 feet above ground when a “Fire Eng 3” warning message appeared on the engine indication and crew alerting system. The captain landed the aircraft and exited the runway.
The warning message ceased after the first officer shut down the No. 3 engine and discharged a fire extinguisher. The crew then informed the air traffic control. Upon arrival, the airport fire contingent found that “a little white smoke was emitting” from the No.3 engine.
Subsequent inspections identified fire damage at the exterior top section of the No.3 engine’s core.
The CAD has classified the case as a serious incident. The engine has been removed and sent for further examination.
Flight Fleets Analyzer shows that the General Electric GEnx-2B67-powered aircraft was built in 2014 and owned by IBJ Leasing, Century Tokyo Leasing and Fuyo General. It is managed by Mizuho Securities.
