An innovative approach to preventing helicopter brown-outs when landing in dusty or sandy conditions is making its international air show debut at the Team Australia stand (Hall C, stand 160).

CGEAR W250CGEAR’s Tactical HeliMats have already won favour with the US military, which is deploying them for use with helicopters in Iraq.

“Brown-outs are a 70-year-old problem in rotary,” says CGEAR business development manager Greg Peters, “and this is a novel product that addresses them.”

The 6.5 x 6.5m (21 x 21ft) mats are joined together using military-grade Velcro and are positioned underneath a helicopter landing in dusty, sandy or even snowy conditions.

They help minimise airborne sand and dust from helicopter downwash, preventing brown-outs and reducing foreign object damage to the aircraft from sticks and stones being blown up.

They are designed to be lightweight, compact and therefore easily transported and stored.

“We are now looking to enter new markets,” says chief executive Steve Belli, “particularly the UK.”
