Ilyushin has reached agreement with Pratt & Whitney Canada to re-engine its Il-114 twin turboprop with PW127Fs and fit Hamilton Standard propellers, it was announced at the show yesterday.

The new version, the Il-114PC (for Pratt Canada) will be offered to both CIS and export customers.

Following the successful conclusion of negotiations late on Sunday night, a hastily-arranged contract signing took place yesterday.

Plans to fit P&WC engines were announced almost exactly two years ago. The aircraft is currently fitted with 1,839kW (2,466shp) Klimov TV7M-117 powerplants.

The value or number of engines involved was not revealed at yesterday's announcement. Ilyushin has 10 orders at present for the Il-114, the freighter version of which is at the show.

Chief designer Nikolai Talikov says that, in terms of fuel consumption, the current and new powerplants on the Il-114 are "practically the same".

However, speaking through an interpreter, he adds: "What we find really attractive with the P&WC engine is its reliability and life-cycle costs.

"Unfortunately, in Russia we don't have engines which are comparable to that."

Offering

Asked whether Ilyushin intended to continue offering the Klimov engine alongside the Canadian powerplant, general designer Gamir Novozhilov says: "Boeing uses three types of engine for the same airframe; why can't we do the same?

"You can see an example already on the Il-96, which has Pratt & Whitney engines, but President Boris Yeltsin uses an Il-96 which is equipped with Russian engines."

The experience of cooperating with P&W over the Il-96 has been successful and the two companies work well together, he adds.
