Australia to upgrade COMINT systems
Australia has approved funding for a partial upgrade of the communications intelligence (COMINT) systems on the Royal Australian Air Force's two classified Project Peacemate electronic intelligence (ELINT) aircraft.
The money is contained within a A$150 million ($118 million) authorisation of the nation's Project Bunyip COMINT project.
The RAAF flies a Lockheed Martin C-130H and a Lockheed Martin EP-3C Orion as national intelligence assets under Project Peacemate.
E-10: cruise missile defence role
Defence against cruise missiles has become the primary mission of the US Air Force's emerging E-10A aircraft. Detection and tracking of the low-flying missiles has now overtaken ground target sensing and aerial battle management as roles for the Boeing 767-400ER-based platform, following the signing by USAF leaders of a directive recasting the aircraft's roles and missions earlier this month, reports this week's Flight International.
The USAF aims to spend $5.3 billion to develop and build five E-10As; an initial design review for the widebody aircraft is scheduled for June.
