Ronaldsway Airport on the Isle of Man has undergone a runway extension that will enable it to handle Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 aircraft.

Engineering firm TPS was involved in extending the runway out into the Irish Sea by 250m (820.2ft) in length and 150m in width.

The extension was carried out to comply with UK civil aviation authority guidelines, after the previous runway was found to fall short of recommended standards.

"Previously, if landing aircraft came in short or overshot on approaching the existing runway they faced a difficult challenge in landing safely, particularly in a seaward direction," says TPS Consult project manager Gerry Prickett.
