Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI), Elbit Systems and Elisra are to compete to supply elementary training to the Israel air force. The selection of a trainer and a company to purchase, operate and maintain the 25 aircraft required is due early next year.

The air force's has shortlisted the Aermacchi SF260E/F from Italy, ENAER T-35 Pillan from Chile, and the Pacific Aerospace CT-4 Airtrainer from New Zealand to replace the ancient Piper PA-18-150 Cub (Flight International, 13-19 February). The new elementary trainer will also perform duties assigned to the equally elderly Fouga Zukit (CM170 Magister). A replacement for the Zukit is also being sought.

IAI has long had aircraft maintenance facilities and Elbit recently acquired Cyclone in northern Israel to also give it a repair and overhaul capability. Elisra, has no maintenance arm, but plans to co-operate with another company.
