Boeing's acceptance of Japan Aircraft Industries' (JAI) proposal to build 35% of the 7E7's structure in exchange for subsidised development and possible launch orders marks Japan's largest involvement in a Boeing programme.

Boeing has signed memoranda of understanding (MoU) with JAI's three main members - Fuji Heavy Industries, Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and firm contracts are expected early next year after formal programme launch.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries will build the composite wing box as part of a Japanese workshare that significantly exceeds the 21% Japanese 777 structural contribution.

KHI will provide a forward fuselage section, the main landing gear wheel well and the main wing fixed trailing-edge, while Fuji Heavy Industries will be responsible for the centre wing box and its integration with the KHI-built wheel well.

Japan's ministry of economy, trade and industry had already requested the 7E7 be given national project status benefiting from direct subsidies and government loans. Following Boeing's MoUs, the request is expected to pass through Japan's congress by year-end and the money will be available from April.

JAI's success puts pressure on All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines to place the widely expected launch orders for the aircraft.
