A flight crew strike due to take place at Japan Airlines (JAL) yesterday was scaled back, while a planned action at All Nippon Airways (ANA) was called off.

However, disaffected workers at Japan's third major carrier, Japan Air System (JAS), stuck to their guns and 172 out of 420 domestic flights were cancelled.

JAL spokesman Geoffrey Tudor says that the union representing just over 1,000 pilots below the rank of captain launched a partial one-day strike, while unionised flight attendants cancelled a planned walkout. All flights operated as normal despite the limited action.

At ANA pilots and flight engineers were due to have begun a 24hr strike at 0001 yesterday but called it off late the previous night. If the action had gone ahead, more than 350 domestic flights would have been cancelled.

Transport workers in Japan have traditionally struck at this time of year to demand improvements on the summer bonuses paid out in early July.
