Lufthansa and JetBlue Airways launched the first phase of their codeshare agreement today as they await JetBlue's transition to the Sabre reservations and inventory system.
Until JetBlue makes its official cutover to Sabre during the first quarter of 2010, Lufthansa is handling management of sales and reservations of the codeshare.
As of today the pact covers 12 of JetBlue's US markets and 400 of Lufthansa's destinations but the carriers plan to add more JetBlue destinations to the agreement next year.
The codeshare comes after the German operator acquired a 19% stake in JetBlue two years ago, and also has representation on the New York-based low-cost carrier's board.
US destinations covered so far include Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse, New York; Fort Myers, West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale and Tampa, Florida; Austin, Texas; New Orleans, Louisiana; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Raleigh/Durham, North Carolina and San Juan, Puerto Rico.
