Kaman helicopters has entered the bidding for the Canadian maritime helicopter project (MHP). The US company is offering the SH-2G Super SeaSprite as a lower cost alternative to new-build machines.

Canada is expected to kick off the MHP programme shortly by issuing a statement of requirements to replace its Sikorsky CH-124 Sea Kings in 2005. This is expected to lead to the release of a request for proposals within the year for up to 32 helicopters.

"We thought it was time to make ourselves available and give them something else to consider," says Al Ferber, Kaman international military marketing. It was thought the pending competition would largely be confined to the EH Industries EH101, Eurocopter AS532 Cougar 2/3 and Sikorsky S-92.

Depending on the final Canadian requirements, Kaman expects to propose a machine modelled on the updated SH-2GA already ordered by Australia. This includes a new two-man Litton glass cockpit, Telephonics APG-143B(V)3 surveillance radar and choice of infrared imagers and active and passive self-defence systems. There is also the option of a L3 AQS-18A dipping sonar.
