Let Kunovice is expecting a fresh boost to its 19-seat L-420 twin turboprop programme as the Czech regional-aircraft manufacturer prepares for international certification of the aircraft early in 1998.

The L-420 is a "Westernised" development of the existing 17-seat L-410 model, equipped with 580kW (780hp) Walter M601F turboprops and AlliedSignal Bendix/King avionics. Production of the older type will now be wound down, says Let, which expects the L-420 to be certificated by Czech aviation authorities by mid-December, with Federal Aviation Administration certification to FAR 23/41 standards following, perhaps in February.

The first prototype of the aircraft was completed in 1993, but certification was delayed because modifications were needed to satisfy the FAA, and because the company decided to focus its efforts on restructuring heavy debts and promoting the 40-seat General Electric CT7-9D-powered L-610G. This aircraft should also receive its FAA certificate in the first quarter of 1998, says Let.
