Indonesian carrier Lion Air has commenced twice daily non-stop services on the Jakarta-Jeddah route, several months after initially planned.

The carrier operates Boeing 747-400 aircraft on the route, says a Lion Air spokesman.

Lion had originally planned to launch a daily service on the route on 28 June, but this was delayed pending approvals from Saudi Arabia.

Lion Air primarily operates 737s. The carrier's two 747-400s are its first wide bodied aircraft.
