Lufthansa Group has confirmed Carsten Spohr as its new chief executive.
Spohr is the head of the passenger airline division at the German flag-carrier, and had been widely tipped in various media as the likely successor to Christoph Franz.
Lufthansa Group states that Spohr will take up the new role at the helm of the company on 1 May.
The company has not identified a replacement for his current post but says the supervisory board will make a decision at the end of April.
Spohr has held several management roles at Lufthansa, including responsibility for its Star Alliance partnership, and was appointed at Lufthansa Cargo chairman in 2007 before heading the passenger airline division in 2011.
