Star Alliance carrier Lufthansa is planning to cut its carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and use blended biofuels as part of the latest iteration of its environmental strategy.
In its latest sustainability report, which will soon be published, Lufthansa is laying down 15 guidelines for adoption during the period until 2020.
Among the measures, the German carrier plans to cut its CO2 emissions per flown kilometre by 25% by 2020, using 2006 levels as a baseline. It is also supporting a wider initiative aimed at cutting nitrogen oxide emissions by 80% by 2020, compared with levels in 2000.
It adds: “Lufthansa intends to increase the amount of bio-fuel admixed with conventional kerosene up to 10% by 2020.”
Lufthansa gives its backing to revenue-neutral incentive systems, such as Frankfurt and Munich Airports’ emission-based landing fees, and the inclusion of aviation in Europe’s emissions trading scheme.
Other initiatives to be pursued under the programme include noise abatement measures and research, supporting the ACARE objective of halving noise emissions by 2020.
Lufthansa says: “With its strategic environmental programme, the group has charted a road map for sustainable growth and profitability in the years to come.”
